Friday Confession

Today's confession features another guest question - this one asked by Kathy of Abbeyclaire Designs. Kathy would like to know when you sew - what days of the week and what times during the day?

My answer feels mildly depressing to me - I am, unfortunately, typically only able to get sewing time in on the weekends. During the week I leave for work at 7 in the morning and don't get home until 7:30 at night - by the time dinner is cooked, eaten & cleaned up, I am usually too tired to do much of anything... I am sometimes able to squeeze in 30 minutes of sewing in the evening - but it has to be something routine. I am far too brain-dead to tackle anything challenging.

So, how about you? When do you sew? In a perfect world, when would you get to sew?

I'm in the same boat I got to work at 5:30 am and get home around 5 pm. So I only sew a little during the week. Usually cut or trace things. Sometimes I sew a little bit during the week but the majority of my sewing is on the weekends usually early in the morning.

I love sewing at night. I don’t have much time to sew during the week and my weekends are usually full so what I’ve tried to do is break down each step of garment construction. I usually have about 30 to 45 minutes. Here are some of my steps.

1. Gather everything I need (patterns, notions, fabric, etc) & put them in a project bag.
2. Read the instructions
3. Trace the pattern pieces
4. Cut out pattern pieces
5. Prepare fabric for cutting. I usually preshrink my fabric when I get it so all I really have to do is iron the creases.
6. Cut fabric (this could take more than one session
7. Apply interfacing if necessary
8. Bring to sewing pattern. My goal is to complete at least one step of instructions per session until the garment is complete.
9.Enjoy the process!

I don’t care how long it takes me to finish a garment. I just want to enjoy spending time doing and learning a craft that I love. I found that when I spend a large block of time sewing, I tend to make more mistakes. I guess I’m tired at that point.

Since I'm an empty nester, I get a chance to sew each evening. Whether I actually get my butt in there and sew is another question! :)

I also get to sew on the weekends...mostly Saturday. Husband has a shop about 10 minutes away and he loves to tinker out there on his project, which leaves me free to tinker on mine!

It depends on what schedule I'm on tho. Typically I sew after 9 P.M. or if I'm asleep then, sew at 3 A.M. Either way, it's always in the middle of the night. I do the majority of my sewing during the week, since I'm single and go out on the weekends.

Even when I can sew during the day, I get called away from it so often I get too frustrated to sew before I lock myself into my room for the night.

A little bit at nights and a couple hours here or there on the weekends.

in a perfect world, i would sew in the morning, after breakfast, until lunchtime. i really don't like to sew at night.

realistically, i sew whenever i can, but i still try to avoid sewing at night.

Whenever I can, I prefer early mornings (we get up at 4:30a due to my husband's job) and I won't sew after 7pm unless I'm on a deadline or my husband isn't home. I spend my evenings with him, doing some sort of hand stitching, but no true work in the studio.

I am fortunate in that I can sew during the day. Good thing, because I don't sew WELL at night. In a perfect world, I would have housekeepers and cooks and "people", leaving me free to sew whenever I want.

I sew mostly in the evenings during the week. I have a 2 yr old who is an early to bed, early to rise kind of guy. So evenings are my best opportunity. That being said however, I am usually tired and end up making stupid mistakes. I would rather sew during the day, but that's not going to happen until I win the lottery. ;)

Thanks so much Gwen for choosing my question for Friday Confession! After reading about how busy everyone else is, I have no excuse! My problem is when I get to my sewing room I have a hard time leaving and nothing else gets done. But it's okay it will wait for me. I have learned alot about organizing from one comment! Thank you .

Another one with long days, out at 6am and home at 6pm. Once supper is done, there's not much left of the evening. I generally spend my weeknights keeping up with the blogs and sewing mostly on the weekends.
