Friday Confession

Remember this classic Carol Burnett spoof on the Gone with the Wind, Scarlett O'Hara dress made from curtains?

I've never made clothes out of curtains, but I've made a purse out of juice bags and I'm getting ready to make bloomers out of bed sheets!

And that leads me to my question for this week: What is the most unusual thing that you have ever sewn with?  I'd love to see pictures, if you can leave a link!  :)

Two come to mind 1. Priest vestments for my friend who was struggling with the collars. No pattern just the priest vestment to copy. 2. I made a Glenda (the good witch of the Wizard of Oz) for a 6' 3" XXL man for a costume party. Everytime I think about that costume it makes me smile- I somehow talked my husband into trying it on for me to hem and we got a picture of it. We still hold it over his head. Sorry no link for pictures.

I can't think of any really unusual fabrics that I've made clothes out of. I did once make s priest's shawl out of Hawaiian print fabric and cross stitched pictures of Dean Stockwell with a halo. http://www.flickr.com/photos/maydela/2377970848/

I recently made my grandson a very nice casual shirt out of a curtain panel I purchased at a yard sale. I washed the fabric and it was like a loose, nubby cotton. Perfect, but ravels like crazy.

Not something I sewed with but something I repaired for a friend. A vinyl camper awning. Sewing machine set up on a picnic table in a driveway, 3 people in front and 3 in back of me to help control the weight. It was big and heavy!

I used to make stuff out of anything I could find. One of my favorite costumes was made out of a sheet, its so soft.

I used a tablecloth for part of a renaissance dress I no longer have photos of.
I thought about a duct tape prom dress for about a minute, but decided it was more of a fun concept than fun to dance in. However, had I been brave enough, it's a good scholarship if you win. Check it out:

I do reconstruct stuff into other stuff on a fairly regular basis-- I guess the best example of less-usual ideas is a costume I made for the Renaissance Faire a few years ago. I wanted a break from my other costumes that I tend to frequently cycle through, so I made myself a gypsy costume. The top was recycled from one I'd made that didn't fit right, but everything else came from the thrift store-- the corset came from a formal dress, the skirt is a tablecloth combined with a loosely-woven bedsheet, and the little hip scarf thing was a curtain panel. You can see it here: http://sew-and-so.blogspot.com/2009/08/best-laid-plans.html

I did also attempt to recycle a leather trenchcoat into a bag once, but that one didn't work out so well. My machine wasn't happy with that one!

I have used curtains, although I have no idea where the picture is. It's somewhere on the net.

Strangest thing would have to be an army sandbag. I cut open 4 of them, sewed them together to make a larger tarp for my mom to put under her ferret cage.

It was cheap. Tarps are high as heck. These were 50 cents each and I didn't need a lot of them. (No pics. I'm sure none of you want to see ferret poo.)

Hey Gwen,
Not unusual fabric, but unusual notions. Old t-shirt, old dress shirt, electric ties, shoe laces, and aluminum pop tops, equals one corset! Dee http://nationalsewingmonth.org/html/contest_entries_2009.html
