Friday Confession

So far, I have experience with two different methods of attaching a simple (i.e., one piece, no stand) collar. The method illustrated above uses the collar to hide the raw edges of the center front facing.

The method below uses the center front facing to hide the raw edges of the collar.

I prefer the first method - although that could be just because I have more experience with it and can get it to work out nicely pretty much every time. I haven't used the second method as often, so it still feels awkward and doesn't always come out looking good.

How about you? Have you used both methods? Are there other methods that you have used as well? Do you have a preference? If so, what is it and why do you like it? I'm looking forward to hearing about your experiences "being collared." ;)

i prefer method #2. i think it looks nicer. i do it all by machine (i edgestitch the fold down instead of handstitch).

It's funny that you ask that as I embark on 2 collared garments- my first ones... a vest and a men's shirt. Although, I am pretty sure my collar has a stand in the shirt, and I don't think the vest is quite the same.

I use both and finish either way, depending on the garment.

I am not all that picky, they come out well because I baste the !@$% out of them before I commit to sewing.

I have never thought about how different patterns suggest the two different methods of attaching collars. I have used both ways and really don't prefer one over the other. Most of the time when I am attaching a collar, it is to a little girl's dress or to a little boy's shirt with a stand.

I like method #2. Instead of folding the seam allowance of the upper collar over thee garment/under collar and sewing it, I bind that edge.

I prefer the second method. With the front facing folding over to the shoulder you don't see the wrong side of the fabric which is great if the wrong side isn't the same print as the right side.

I've done them both and prefer method #2. Everything thing turns out cleaner that way.

I have used method #2 quite often on my grandson's shirts and my camp-style shirts. I use Gigi's method for men's shirts with yokes. I haven't used method #1 in many years.

I don't like either way. I prefer to cover the back neck seam with bias tape. Without making a mock-up and taking my own pictures, this link shows something close to what I would do: http://wildflowersandwhimsy.blogspot.com/2011/02/how-to-finish-inside-of-collar.html
