Friday Confession

When it comes to getting stains out of fabrics, I'm not very savvy. About the only "trick" that I know is to use baby powder on oil or grease stains. Someone told me about this after I bumped up against the unfinished inside edge of a car door in a silk dress that I had just finished - what a life saver!

How about you? Do you have any "secret weapons" to get different kinds of stains out of your clothes?

Straight up peroxide is pretty fantastic for removing things, but test it on a scrap - sometimes it bleaches everything out, even the original color.

Dawn dish detergent is also a pretty awesome de-greaser for things that are sturdier than silk.

I know 2 tricks for getting stains off of clothes - 1) the old standby, club soda, and 2) use pantyhose to rub off deodorant residue from your clothes.

I can add-
Berry stains will come out if you pour boiling water directly on them until they are gone. The water does have to be boiling - hot out of the tap will not work.

Rubbing alcohol will remove most types of ink and will remove Fray Check residue. In fact, any product with a concentration of alcohol will do - we used to use hairspray in college to remove ink stains. I've heard that hand sanitizer works well, too. It was Pam Erny on her blog that posted that tip. http://off-the-cuff-style.blogspot.com/2009/07/airing-my-dirty-laundrya-quick-tip.html

I use rubbing alcohol or Shout!

I smoke and wash my clothes with a cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle.

Gets out all the smells and residues.

I use glycerin dish soap on grease stains and sunlight for food based stains.

Cascade with a bit of water would get stains out of white baby clothes - especially formula spit-up! Alchohol for pen marks. Lots of Shout.

When I worked in the hair salon we always used hairspray to get out hair color from our clothes (all my clothes had color on them)It won't come out until you wash it. And I've used lemon juice to get out ink which worked really well. Baby powder works really good to put on the the white shirts before you wear it to keep the yellow stains in the arm pits from happening.
Besides that, toss it in the rags for cleaning the house.
