Friday Confession

Pockets. I love pockets! I hate clothes without pockets! And I NEVER remember to add pockets when I'm sewing my own clothes! :(

I wore my new pink skirt on Monday, and wanted to kick myself when I went to slide my hands into side pockets and there weren't any! It would have been SO easy to put them in while I was making the skirt... :(

How about you? Do you routinely add pockets when you sew something for yourself? If so, always the same type, or do you have different versions that you can do, depending upon the garment? Do you have a favorite pocket tutorial? Speaking of tutorials, have you seen Summerset's recent pocket tutorial? It's excellent! :)

I'm not a pocket person, and don't put my hands in pockets, except in my winter coat! I put pockets in coats for function. But in jackets, dresses or skirts I don't, unless they serve a purely decorative purpose.

That's my biggest gripe about ready-made women's clothing. I like to dress relatively smart (i.e. pants rather than just jeans), and the moment you do that, you discover that there is often nowhere to put your keys when you leave the office, nor anything else. I don't know how to sew, but certainly if someone was sewing for me, I'd want pockets if at all possible.

I love pockets too! When I took the pants fitting class at Pattern Review, I made my 'muslin' pair of pants without because I thought I would be making many more pair- and haven't had a chance in the months since. I wear my muslins a lot and really regret that I didn't take the actual time to put pockets in!

I need pockets. What else would I do with all the things my kids hand me? And when I'm walking around teaching I'm always putting things in my pockets: bobbins, pressure feet. Without any pockets where would I put my money and keys when I have to run to the corner store to buy more milk for the morning. They're a must in my life!

I am in the pockets camp.

I love pockets. I try to remember to put them in things that don't have them and steal pattern pieces from other patterns to make them if the pattern doesn't have them.

Having never made pants before, I didn't know you had to put the pockets on before you sewed up the legs. So the only pants I have so far made are pocketless and it drives me mad! Now I know better. Most likely next time, I will definitely put pockets in all the while chanting, "order of construction, order of construction, order of construction!"

I definitely have a co-dependent relationship w/pockets. I work in an accounting office in which it is standard practice to lock our office whenever we are going to leave for more than just a chat across the hall; gotta have somewhere to stash my keys! And singing in the church choir...I must have an emergency kleenex stashed somewhere on my person, for a number of quite possible scenarios. And pockets do give one someplace to put one's hands.

So, yes, I add pockets where there are none. The clothes in my closet that do not have pockets generally do not get worn...more's the pity...

I routinely don't add pockets, even if they call for them. I also carry a purse at all times, so it's never a big deal, and if I need pockets, I'm at home or somewhere I can wear an apron. Jackets and coats are the exception to it, or a pattern with pockets that make the skirt/dress/pants

I really don't need to add the bulk to my hips. While some thinks that it's laziness, it's just all about keeping the lines as clean and smooth and I can.

I don't add pockets the first time I make something without a pocket pattern. I just forget to add pockets. It's frustrating.
