Friday Confession

Okay, back to a "real" confession - I don't always put in stay-stitching before I begin constructing my garments. :(

I am pretty good about stay-stitching curves that need to be clipped immediately, but I sometimes skip necklines and just attach the collar to the "naked" edge.

How about you? Are you a faithful stay-stitcher? Have you ever experienced any negative consequences from not stay-stitching?

I'm a faithful stay stitcher now that I'm older. But when I was younger use to skip sometimes.

I always stay-stitch. Learned by disaster!

To stay stitch or not to stay stitch - this is the question :)
It all depends on the fabric. Always if there is a stretch to help the fabric "stay" in place.

It's the first step to most all projects and one that throws a beginner sewer/sewest off. Sometimes you have to know terminology to help you sew and stay stitching is one of those terms that make people go "huh".

I seldom do it, except on low cut tops and knits. Since I don't use knits too often, and we're talking extremely low cut, it's maybe one garment in 50. I probably should, and it's a good idea not to skip this step, but I never have had a problem not doing it.

I stay stitch always. I've seen the results of not stay stitching and it wasn't pretty.

Generally I stay stitch and like others I've learned to do it from disasters. I am amazed that pattern instructions, when they even include it, don't always do it first. Stay stitching immediately before you attach the facing does absolutely no good if you've already manhandled the neckline while you stitched and pressed the darts, tried the bodice on, etc.

I don't stay stitch, but I tape necklines. I used to staystitch when I remembered but it was never a favorite of mine. Then I read a posting by Kathleen Fasenella that she never does it and the industry never does and that it stretches the seam out and doesn't keep it shape at all. I do do it for princess seams so that I can clip. Except, that if you use or trim your curved seam to 1/4" you don't need to clip it anyway.

I'm a stay stitcher. It takes so little time and I figure it does help.

I never do it. Well..unless it's some really unstable fabric. But then again, most of my garments are knits!

I staystitch using a very lightweight knit interfacing.

I almost always staystitch. It is rare that I don't, and when I don't, I regret it.

I do it every time, unless I apply some sort of fusible tape instead. Then I use the paper pattern to maintain the shape of the piece while fusing on the tape.
