Friday Confession

Keeping Organized...
You got a taste of my organizational system in my Friday Confession two weeks ago, when I talked about my pattern stash. As you may remember, I keep my patterns in 4 storage boxes, labeled (respectively) "some patterns", "some more patterns", "some other patterns" and "the rest of the patterns". ;)

In other words, my sewing life is not well organized. My main accomplishment is that I keep all my sewing stuff in my sewing room. (Warning: some people may find the next sentence distressing.) In addition, I consider "piling everything in the closet and closing the closet door" to be an acceptable cleaning strategy... ;)

I'd like to be able to say that I still know everything I have and where it all is, but I'm afraid of the recoil when the truth snaps from being stretched so far... I suppose I could claim that I enjoy the adventure of browsing through my closet - I never know what will turn up! ;)

So, we've already talked about accounting systems for our sewing, but what about organizational systems? Do you have any special system for organizing and storing your fabrics? Your patterns? Your threads and/or other notions?

Did you have a system from the beginning, or did you adopt one sometime later, as your projects and supplies began to grow? Any advice for people who have reached the stage where they really need to get more organized in the sewing room?
PS - This is your last reminder to sign up for my 100th blog post give-away! I'll be doing the drawing this weekend...

Organised? SYSTEM? hahahahahahah THUNK *falls off chair laughing*

If it's in the sewing room (somewhere) I consider that system enough. I regularly lose stuff and have to buy replacements. ANd I know I have 3 metres of the perfect red fabric in there... provided the newly evolving life forms over the back of the sewing cabinet haven't eaten it...

Nominally, I have organization. At least a plan. In practice, I have stuff in various piles in various places. To whit: I just cut out a second piece for a shirt because I apparently threw the original away and I have a blouse hanging in limbo because I cannot find the cuffs I made back in May. If I actually used my system...everything would be neat as a pin and I'd know where it was. Not sure where the breakdown is happening.... ;)

PS both of those missing item events happened because my regularly scheduled sewing got interrupted for costuming, which took over the sewing nook and made a shambles of everything...

I like your system. But I cannot contain everything in my sewing room. After all, that's the meaning of "spare" in the term "spare bedroom", right????!!!

I keep clothing fabric in the spare bedroom's built-in cupboards.

My sewing room? I have a 4x8 piece of pegboard on one wall. If a notion has a hole in it for hanging, it's on that board. If not, there's a drawer somewhere around here for it.

Thread is all on thread racks hanging on the pegboard. Cottons on one side, polyester on the other. Arranged by colors. It looks like two rainbows. Bobbins hang below in bobbinsavers; again, according to thread content.

I have a hanging ruler holder, so my quilt rulers are on it, with my scissors and rotary cutters hanging from hooks on that holder.

Yeah, overall, pretty organized. Only because I HATE clutter. I can't work in disarray, like I can't cook in a dirty kitchen. I clean AS I cook.

Ok?

PS. Caity...rotf!

You've heard my story: small space, must be super-organized. A place for everything, and if there isn't room for more fabrics or patterns, then I need to clean house. That's my system.

Hmmm. Well some things are very organized and some are not. My thread I am extremely organized about. It is in clear thread organizers by the order of the spectrum with all the neutral colors first. The ends of the spools with the barcodes and colors numbers must face up, too. Fabric is also organized by color of the spectrum. Beads and sequins are separated in certain drawers for certain kinds (pearls, plastic, seed beads, sequins, etc.). I have bins and boxes for patterns. The buttons, notions, elastics, zippers etc. are in rolling carts with drawers in what I called "controlled chaos". This is essentially the same as your "piling everything in the closet and closing the closet door" strategy. I know which drawer everything is in, but if I were to send you in there looking for something, you'd never find it on your own. Things continue according to the 2nd law of thermodynamics until I can't take it anymore and reorganize. Which is coming soon for the studio.

well, right now my room looks like a hurricane hit it, but the fabric and patterns are usually organized/put away. i roll my fabric, and it's all in the cabinets under the bay window:
fabric storage
i usually have a good idea of what i have.

pattern envelopes are in binders, divided by type (skirts/pants, costumes, dresses, etc). patterns themselves are in 9x12 brown envelopes w/pattern company and # written on them. if i've made them up, notes are on the envelope too, as to changes or what size is traced off. envelopes are stored in boxes in the attic by pattern company, then numerically (my attic is easy to get into.

hmm, notions and stuff are in a drawer unit by the window. presser feet, bobbins, etc are in a little drawer thingy i bought at the hardware store (i think for nails and screws), and it sits on my sewing table. thread is on thread racks on the wall, though right now all the thread is on the floor thanks to my 4 yo.

i want to put a little shelf by my ironing board (i have my eye on one at pottery barn kids that has a built in iPod dock/speakers) for my pincushion and other things, with a magentic board under it for my scissors. in time, in time.

I am trying to keep things organized since I have very little to keep organized as of now (although my stash is quickly growing). I just bought a jar to put spare buttons in, and there are only 5 buttons in it right now. :) It's only a matter of time before my organization scheme collapses though.
